We believe that in order for LGBT people to make an informed decision at the ballot box on 12 December, we need to know what the political party's vision for LGBT equality is, and hear about issues that are important to us. That is why LGBT Foundation, Stonewall and Consortium hosted an LGBT General Election Hustings event, so that representatives from major political parties can answer your questions about how they plan to deliver a fair and equal society for all lesbian, gay, bi and trans people.
This was a fantastic opportunity for LGBT organisations, campaigners and community members to ask questions to representatives from the main political parties on specific policy commitments to ensure a fairer and more equal society.
Questions were submitted from across the LGBT sector, and included topics on domestic abuse, education, trans equality, hate crime, LGBT health inequalities, inclusion of LGBT disabled people, legislative action on conversion therapy and protections for sex workers.
Representatives from each political party were:
- Conservatives - Baroness Susan Williams, Minister of State for Equalities and Life Peer
- Labour - Dawn Butler, Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities
- Liberal Democrats - Helen Belcher, Parliamentary candidate for Chippenham
- Green Party - Benali Hamdache, Co-Chair of LGBTIQA+ Greens, and Green candidate for the London Assembly
Thank you to Jasmine Andersson from i Newspaper for chairing the event.
